About the CYTC
The CYTC is a performing ensemble geared toward young players that goes beyond a regular band class. This ensemble, comprised of student trombonists with at least one year of playing experience, will work as a unit to perform music designed for a young trombone choir. The music instruction will be individualized to the player and create a successful and enriching experience for the student.
This 12 week, semester long program was conceived to push students beyond the average band class setting to create a safe and innovative lab where young musicians can express themselves while having a great time playing music.
The Columbus Youth Trombone Choir will hold its first meeting on Tuesday, September 5 at the Schwob School of Music located next to the RiverCenter. Rehearsals will meet every Tuesday night from 7:00 - 8:30 pm until December 12th, excluding October 31st. The final concert will be held December 12, at 7:00 pm. at a location TBD.
Students wanting to join the CYTC must fully fill out the application given to the student at his/her school no later than August 31, 2o17. The application is also located below.

There are three ways to turn in the application:
- Return application to the student's band director
- Scan and e-mail to [email protected]
- Mail to the Columbus Youth Trombone Choir located at 632 2nd Ave. Columbus, GA 31901
Parents may attend the rehearsals, and are encouraged to see the development of their young trombonists. On September 5th, the first rehearsal, students will have a short audition. A prepared solo is not necessary. Auditions and applications are simply looking for basic musical aptitude including pitch matching and steady beat, appropriate and functional group behavior, commitment to the rehearsal and performance schedule and the ability to follow instruction. For example, a student could play a scale, a warm-up exercise they do in his/her band class, and a piece of music from his/her school method book.
Trombonists must be 11 years old by Sept. 1, 2017 and not older than 14 by Jan. 1, 2018 and be able to attend at least 10 of the rehearsals and the final concert on December 12th (listed on the Calendar page). All applicants will be informed of their acceptance before any payment or registration is required. Please contact Andrew Markel at (407)-701-4231 or by emailing [email protected] if you have any questions.
Once application is received and accepted, registration is $75 per semester, which comes down to about $6 a week for an hour and a half of quality instruction, team-building, and collaboration with peers from throughout the community.
Scholarships may be available for students in need, as all students are encouraged to apply. Please contact Andrew Markel by emailing [email protected] to see about scholarship opportunities.
